Live for each sunrise
versus planning for sunset
in your final act
A friend and I were talking about aging, and how differently people act as they grow older. She told me of a proverb she believed was Japanese. We each live two lives, the first when we are young, the second when we grow older. In the second life, we make a choice: do we continue to live, or prepare to die.
You’ve likely seen people who have chosen both. The 90-year-old who still runs marathons exemplifies the first. The always sickly person who retires and never does anything except watch television is he second. We each choose subconsciously how we’ll spend our final years before they get here.
Decide now how you want to spend your final years, and plan accordingly.
